The MG 1/100 ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos is the Master Grade interpretation of the Gundam Barbatos 4th Form, the primary mobile suit piloted by Mikazuki Augus in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans.
At 1/100 scale, the Barbatos has a powerful presence while retaining the distinctive proportions of the original design. The armor is separated into multiple molded colors, while the internal Gundam Frame provides an extensive mechanical structure underneath.
One of the defining characteristics of this MG release is that the internal frame is not simply hidden beneath the armor. Bandai designed the kit so that the frame, cylinders, and armor work together during movement, creating a highly mechanical appearance when the model is posed.
The exposed silver-plated cylinders are particularly striking. As the arms, shoulders, torso, and legs move, the mechanical pistons interact with the surrounding frame, giving the completed model a much more realistic heavy-machine appearance.
The MG 1/100 Gundam Barbatos brings the protagonist mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans into the Master Grade lineup with a completely developed Gundam Frame internal structure.
Rather than simply scaling up the existing 1/100 Barbatos, Bandai created a dedicated MG interpretation with extensive mechanical detail, improved articulation, enhanced part separation, and a much more sophisticated internal frame.
At the center of the model is the Gundam Frame, the ancient mobile-suit framework used by the Gundam-type machines of the Post Disaster era. The MG version reproduces this structure in considerable detail, including the exposed mechanical frame and numerous hydraulic-cylinder mechanisms.
The dual Ahab Reactors in the chest are also reproduced, with a rotating gimmick that can be seen through the front of the torso. This mechanical feature adds another layer of realism to the finished model.
The upper body incorporates a movable structure that links the internal frame, cylinders, and armor. As the Barbatos changes position, these components move together rather than simply rotating as independent plastic parts.
The shoulders are particularly impressive. Their cylinders extend and retract with the movement of the shoulder armor, allowing the Barbatos to take aggressive poses while maintaining the characteristic mechanical appearance of the Gundam Frame.
The knee system also uses linked movement between the frame and cylinders. By extending sections behind the knees, the articulation range can be increased enough to achieve a natural kneeling position.
The Barbatos' characteristic forward-leaning standby pose is also supported by the MG engineering. The torso and hip structure allow the model to lean and shift its weight, recreating the distinctive low, aggressive posture associated with the mobile suit.
The MG Gundam Barbatos comes equipped with the three primary weapons associated with its 4th Form: the massive Mace, Long Sword, and 300mm Smoothbore Gun.
The enormous Mace is one of the most recognizable weapons in the entire Iron-Blooded Orphans series. The MG version features a sliding gimmick in the grip and tip, adding mechanical functionality to the weapon.
The 300mm Smoothbore Gun features a folding and sliding barrel mechanism. A locking system helps maintain the weapon's configuration during posing and display.
The Long Sword provides the Barbatos with a close-combat weapon that contrasts with the overwhelming size and weight of the Mace.
Together, these weapons allow the model to reproduce the Barbatos' signature combat style, ranging from powerful close-range attacks to long-range support fire.
The MG Barbatos is designed around the idea that the mechanics should move with the armor.
As the arms and legs bend, the internal cylinders shift position. The armor itself also moves to accommodate the articulation, revealing portions of the Gundam Frame beneath.
This approach makes the kit particularly satisfying to pose because the movement itself becomes part of the visual presentation.
The result is a Gunpla that looks mechanical even when it is standing still, while dynamic poses reveal even more of the internal engineering.
